Looking for a pottery workshop in London? Here’s everything you need to know about our Ultimate Pottery Experience — from what you’ll make, how the wheel works, BYOB details, and what to expect on the day.

Step inside the arch.

You're not walking into a chain workshop or a Pinterest-perfect pottery class copied from a template. You're stepping into Token Studio London — a Bermondsey railway arch where every technique, every method, every moment of the session was invented from scratch by our founder. Nothing borrowed. Nothing generic. Hundreds of thousands of artists just like you have sat at these tables, gotten clay under their nails, and left with something they made with their own hands.

We do something most studios won't — same-day making and painting, all in one session. No coming back. No waiting. You walk out with a finished piece that day.

And here's the thing nobody warns you about: the clay itself gets you. The moment you touch it, something shifts. It comes from the earth, and working with it connects you to something much bigger than a Tuesday evening in SE1. The moulding, the shaping, the quiet focus it demands — that's not just craft. That's therapy. That's the kind of reset your nervous system didn't know it needed.

We've gathered every question we've ever been asked, right here — and this blog exists to answer all of them.

What Makes Our Pottery Workshop Unique

Let's start with the obvious: you won't find this workshop on a template. Every technique taught here was developed exclusively by our founder — original methods, refined over years, that you simply cannot find at any other studio in London.

We keep sessions intimate at a maximum of 20 people, so this never feels like a conveyor belt. It feels like a party — a BYOB one at that. Bring your drinks, bring your people, and let the clay do the rest. We've worked hard to create an atmosphere where the pressure to "be good at art" disappears the moment you walk through the arch.

Here's what you get in a single session:

  • Here's what you get in a single session:

    • Original techniques found nowhere else, taught from scratch

    • Handbuilding to shape your piece into something truly one of a kind

    • Same-day painting so you leave with a finished, decorated creation

    • All tools, equipment and materials provided — just show up

    • BYOB freedom — yes, wine and clay go together beautifully

And when the session wraps, you're already in one of London's best corners to keep the day going. Token Studio sits at the heart of the Bermondsey Beer Mile, steps from the newly opened vintage market and Malta Street Market — a full day out before you've even planned one.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Workshop Experience

Q: Is this a pottery wheel workshop?

A: Yes. The Ultimate Pottery Workshop is a wheel throwing experience where you'll learn how to shape clay on a pottery wheel with guidance from our instructors. Wheel throwing is one of the most iconic pottery techniques and is often what people imagine when they think of pottery.

Q: How do I book?

A: You can check live availability and book directly through our booking calendar by clicking here. Simply choose your preferred date and time and complete your booking on our website.

If you have already pre-paid or purchased a ticket, please scroll to the bottom of this page and complete the Convert form. You will then receive a code which can be applied at checkout to remove the payment amount when booking your session.

Q: Will I get to use a pottery wheel?

A: Absolutely. Every guest will have the opportunity to experience wheel throwing and learn the fundamentals of shaping clay on a pottery wheel.

Q: Do I need any experience to join?

A: None whatsoever. The Ultimate Pottery Workshop was designed from the ground up for complete beginners, and that's genuinely who thrives most in it. Our techniques are original to Token Studio — you're not expected to have picked up a skill somewhere else first. You'll be guided through everything, step by step, from the moment you sit down.

Q: Can I really make and paint in the same session?

A: Yes — and this is one of the things that makes us different. Most pottery studios fire your piece first and have you come back another day to paint. We do it all in one. You make it, you paint it, you leave with it. Same day, same session, no second trip.

Q: How big are the sessions?

A: Our general sessions run with up to 20 people, keeping things intimate and personal. Need more space for a larger group? Get in touch and we can discuss options — we're flexible on request.

Q: Will I feel awkward attending alone?

A: Not at all. Many guests attend solo. The relaxed atmosphere and shared creative experience make it easy to feel comfortable from the start.

Q: What if I'm not creative or artistic?

A: That's exactly who the workshop is designed for. Most guests arrive with little or no creative experience, and our instructors guide you through the process step by step.

Q: What if my piece collapses on the wheel?

A: Don't worry — it happens to everyone, including experienced potters. Learning to work with clay on a wheel is part of the fun, and our instructors will help you throughout the process.

Pricing & What's Included

Q: What's included in the ticket price?

A: Everything you need. All tools, equipment, clay, and paint are provided. There's nothing to bring except yourself — and your drinks if you fancy it, because yes, we're fully BYOB.

Q: Are there any hidden costs on the day?

A: No. What you pay when you book is what you pay — all tools, equipment, clay and paint are included, and nothing extra is charged during the session.

Q: What is handbuilding pottery?

A: Handbuilding is a pottery technique that uses your hands and simple tools rather than a pottery wheel. It allows beginners to create bowls, mugs, dishes, sculptures, and decorative pieces without previous experience.

Q: Can I get my piece fired in a kiln?

A: Yes, and this is completely optional. If you'd like your piece professionally fired and glazed after the workshop, we offer this as an add-on for £10 per item. This is separate work that happens after your session, so it's not something that affects your day — we'll just arrange it with you at the end if you're interested. Kiln-fired pieces have a different finish and durability to the painted pieces you take home on the day, so it's a lovely option if you want to take things a step further.

Q: Is this one of those pottery classes like in the movie Ghost?

A: Yes — wheel throwing is the same iconic pottery technique made famous by the movie Ghost. While we can't promise Hollywood moments, you'll definitely get the authentic experience of working with clay on a spinning pottery wheel.

Q: What if I make a mistake with my pottery?

A: Mistakes are part of the creative process. Clay is surprisingly forgiving, and our instructors can help you adjust, repair, or redesign your piece as you go.

Q: Can I make a mug during the workshop?

A: In many sessions, yes. The exact projects available depend on the workshop format and timing, but mugs are one of the most popular pieces guests choose to create.

Hen Parties & Group Bookings

Q: Is this suitable for hen parties?

A: It's one of our most popular hen party experiences in London, and honestly it makes perfect sense — BYOB, a relaxed arch setting, a hands-on activity that gets everyone laughing, and a finished keepsake to take home. Groups of up to 20 can book out a session exclusively, or join a mixed session depending on availability.

Q: Is this a good date night activity in London?

A: Absolutely. Many couples choose the Ultimate Pottery Workshop because it combines creativity, conversation, and a relaxed atmosphere. Unlike traditional date nights, you'll leave with a handmade keepsake and a shared experience to remember.

Q: How do I book for a large group?

A: For groups, the best route is to contact us directly via email or Instagram DM rather than booking individual tickets through the website. We'll sort the details, confirm numbers, and make sure the session is set up properly for your group.

Q: Can we have the arch to ourselves?

A: Yes — private hire is available for groups. Get in touch and we'll let you know what's possible based on your date and group size.

Your Finished Piece

Q: Do I take my piece home on the day?

A: You take it home the same day — painted and finished. No waiting, no return visits, no chasing emails about when it's ready.

Q: Will it be delicate? How do I get it home safely?

A: We'll wrap it up for you before you leave. That said, treat it with a little care on the journey — it's a handmade piece, not a supermarket carrier bag.

Q: Can my piece get wet or be used practically?

A: This depends on how your piece is finished. If you take your piece home as it is after the session (before firing), it will be an unfired clay object. At this stage, it is for decorative use only and should not be exposed to water, as it will not be waterproof and may soften or break down if it gets wet.

If you choose to have your piece glazed and kiln-fired, it becomes fully vitrified and functional. That means it can be used as everyday tableware such as cups, bowls, or mugs depending on what you create. We use lead-free, food-safe glazes, and once fired at around 1200°C for approximately 24 hours in the kiln, your piece becomes durable, waterproof, and dishwasher-safe.

Our team will always guide you on what your specific piece is suitable for during the session, so you leave knowing exactly how it can be used.

Getting Here

Q: Where exactly is Token Studio London?

A: We're in a Bermondsey railway arch in SE1 — well connected by tube and bus, and very much worth the trip. The nearest stations are London Bridge and Bermondsey on the Jubilee line.

Q: Is there parking nearby?

A: Street parking is available in the surrounding area, though as with most of central London it's worth checking restrictions before you drive. We'd always recommend public transport if you can — it's straightforward from most parts of London.

Q: Is the studio accessible?

A: Please get in touch before booking if you have any specific accessibility requirements and we'll do our best to accommodate you and give you an honest picture of the space.

What to Wear

Q: Is there a dress code for the workshop?

A: No dress code, but a few practical things worth knowing before you arrive. Wear something comfortable that you don't mind getting a little clayey — aprons are provided but clay has a way of finding its way everywhere regardless.

Q: What shoes should I wear?

A: Closed-toe shoes please. We work with tools in the studio and dropping something on an open toe is not the souvenir anyone wants from the day.

Q: What about jewellery?

A: We'd strongly recommend leaving rings and bracelets at home, or at least removing them before the session. The wheel and the clay are not kind to jewellery — pieces can get scratched, damaged, or genuinely lost in the clay without you even noticing until it's too late.

Q: What about nails?

A: Short nails make working with clay a little easier, but long nails are absolutely fine — plenty of our guests come in with beautiful manicures and manage perfectly well. Just be aware that clay is not exactly a spa treatment for them, so go in with realistic expectations.

Gift Cards & Third-Party Tickets

Q: Do you offer gift cards?

A: Yes — gift cards are available directly through our website on the gift card page. They make a brilliant present for anyone who's been meaning to try pottery, or honestly just needs an excuse to spend an afternoon in a Bermondsey arch with a glass of wine and some clay.

Q: I bought a ticket through a third-party platform like ClassBento — how do I book my actual session?

A: Head to our booking page on the Token Studio website and scroll to the bottom — you'll find the conversion form right there. Enter your third-party code and we'll process it into a code that works directly on our site. Once you have that, you're fully in control — you choose your date, your time, and confirm all your own details.

Q: How long does the code conversion take?

A: Code conversion is a manual process and takes up to 24 hours. Please factor this in when planning your visit — submitting your code the morning you want to book a session that afternoon won't give us enough time to process it. A little advance planning goes a long way here. We also kindly ask that guests allow us the time we need — sending repeated or aggressive messages to chase the process will unfortunately only slow things down, not speed them up.

Q: I have a ticket that covers more than one person — how does that work?

A: We'll issue a single code to cover all the attendees on your ticket. When you go to book, you must select the correct number of people attending — not just one. We plan every session around confirmed numbers, and if guests arrive without being properly registered, it puts the whole session in a difficult position. Please make sure everyone coming is accounted for when you complete your booking.

Q: Can I choose my own date and time when redeeming a gift card or third-party ticket?

A: Absolutely — that's the whole point. Once your code is ready, you're in full control of when you book. Pick a date and time that suits you, confirm your details, and you're good to go.

Bookings, Cancellations & Rescheduling

Q: Can I cancel my booking?

A: As these are ticketed events, cancellations are not available once a booking is made. However, we completely understand that life happens — which is why rescheduling is free and flexible.

Q: Can I reschedule my session?

A: Yes, and you can do it yourself without needing to contact us. The rescheduling link is included in your booking confirmation email — just follow it to pick a new date and time that works for you. Simple and fully in your hands.

Q: I haven't received a booking confirmation email — what should I do?

A: Before getting in touch, it's worth running through a few things first. Double-check every email address you might have used — it's more common than you'd think to book under an old address or make a small typo. Also check your spam and junk folders, as confirmation emails occasionally land there. If you've gone through all of that and still can't find it, then absolutely reach out to us and we'll get it sorted.

Q: How quickly does Token Studio respond to messages?

A: We respond to every single enquiry within 24 hours, without fail. If you've waited longer than that and haven't heard back, the most likely culprit is a typo in your email address — so it's always worth double-checking that too.

Age & Suitability

Q: Is there an age limit for the Ultimate Pottery Workshop?

A: The Ultimate Pottery Workshop is designed for adults and we strongly recommend that anyone under 12 attends our dedicated kids' session instead. It's specifically designed with younger participants in mind and will be a much better experience for them.

Q: Do you run sessions for children?

A: Yes — we have a separate kids' workshop that's built around younger participants. If you're booking for or bringing a child under 12, please book that session rather than the adult Ultimate Pottery Workshop. You can find it here.

Our Studio Policy & Code of Conduct

Q: Is there a code of conduct for attending a session?

A: Token Studio is a creative, welcoming space and we work hard to keep it that way for every single person who walks through the arch — guests and staff alike. We ask everyone to be respectful, considerate, and mindful of those around them from the moment they arrive.

Q: What happens if a guest behaves inappropriately?

A: We operate a zero tolerance policy on abusive behaviour, full stop. If at any point — before or during a session — a guest is found to be behaving in an abusive or threatening manner toward our staff or other guests, or arrives in a state that suggests they have consumed excessive alcohol, we reserve the right to remove that person from the studio immediately. The police will be called if necessary. No refund will be issued, regardless of what stage the booking is at.

Q: You're BYOB — does that mean anything goes with alcohol?

A: BYOB is part of what makes Token Studio a relaxed, social experience and the vast majority of guests enjoy it exactly as it's intended — responsibly and joyfully. We simply ask that it stays that way. Excessive alcohol consumption that affects your behaviour or the experience of those around you will not be tolerated.
