Your complete FAQ guide to Token Studio London's most creative candle making experience — BYOB, Bermondsey SE1
If you've been searching for a candle making workshop in London that goes way beyond "pour wax in a jar and go home," you've found it. The Statement Candle Bowl Workshop at Token Studio London is a full hands-on making experience where you mould wax shapes, build a sculptural candle, blend your own scent, and walk away with something genuinely one of a kind.
We'll be straight with you: you won't find another candle workshop in London that runs sessions this way. Anywhere else, you're pouring wax into a container someone else made. Here, you're making the candle itself — every shape, every layer, every scent decision — from scratch. That's not marketing. That's just what the session is.
Here's everything people ask us before they book.
What exactly is the Statement Candle Bowl Workshop?
It's a 90-minute BYOB candle-making workshop in Bermondsey, London SE1, where you design and build a sculptural statement candle completely from scratch. You choose your vessel, mould wax shapes from over 1,000 options in the studio, blend your own scent from 20+ essential oils, and finish with dried botanicals. Every candle that walks out of the studio looks completely different — and that's entirely the point.
How is this different from other candle-making workshops in London?
Most candle workshops hand you a glass jar and ask you to pour in scented wax. That's it. The Statement Candle Bowl Workshop is a completely different experience — and honestly, you won't find another candle session in London that works this way.
Here's what makes it different:
You mould every wax shape yourself. Using over 1,000 moulds in the studio — flowers, geometric forms, botanicals, abstract shapes, animals — you create the wax elements that make up your candle. Nothing is pre-made for you.
You design how it all comes together. Some people build a deep vessel candle with a sculptural, designer-style top. Others make a collection of shaped wax pieces and display them like an artwork across a flat vessel. The outcome is genuinely unpredictable — and that's the beauty of it.
You choose your vessel. Either a large single bowl or a mix-and-match set where two vessels combine as a pair.
You blend your own scent from 20+ essential oils directly into the wax.
You add your botanicals — dried flowers, herbs, spices — pressed in or scattered on top.
The only element that arrives ready is the painted plaster vessel — and that's for a practical reason (more on that below). Every wax element in your candle is made by you, during the session.
Why is the vessel pre-made? Can I make my own?
Great question. The plaster vessels are painted and sealed by us in advance because after painting, they need two coats of non-toxic, wax-safe sealer — with 24 hours' drying time between each coat. That's a 48-hour process before the vessel is safe to hold hot wax, so it's not something that can happen during a 90-minute session.
That said, if you're curious about the vessel-making process, we're happy to let you make one during the session for educational purposes. Just know that those pieces stay in the studio — they need to go through the full sealing process before they can be used, so they become part of our stock for future workshops. But if you want to learn how it's done, just ask!
What are my vessel options?
You choose between two styles:
Large single vessel — a generous bowl that's perfect for a dramatic, sculptural candle centrepiece
Mix-and-match set — two vessel parts that combine together as a pair, giving you creative freedom across both pieces
Both options are pre-painted plaster, sealed and ready for wax. Your creative choices start the moment you pick up your vessel.
What can I actually make with the wax?
This is where it gets exciting. Once you've chosen your vessel, you have free access to all the wax moulds in the studio — over 1,000 shapes spanning flowers, leaves, botanicals, geometric forms, abstract shapes, miniature figures, and more.
You mould the wax shapes yourself during the session (soy wax sets quickly, so this part moves at a satisfying pace), then design how they come together. Two popular approaches:
The designer candle look: Pour coloured soy wax into the vessel, then use your moulded shapes to build a textured, layered top — like something you'd see in a high-end home décor shop.
The sculptural art display: Make a collection of individual wax shapes, mix-and-match them, stack them, and arrange them across a flatter vessel like a display piece. Less candle, more wearable art for your shelf.
There's no right or wrong — and that's why no two candles from the same session ever look the same.
Do I get to choose my scent?
Yes — and this part is genuinely lovely. You'll blend your own scent from over 20 premium essential oils. Floral, earthy, fresh, cosy, citrus — the range covers every mood. You mix the oils directly into your wax so the scent is personal to you, not picked off a shelf.
What botanicals are available?
You'll have a selection of dried herbs, flowers, spices, and natural botanicals to finish your candle — lavender, rose petals, chamomile, cinnamon, and more depending on the session. You can press them into the wax, scatter them across the top, or tuck them between shapes. It adds a final layer of texture and scent that makes the whole thing feel incredibly considered.
Can I take my candle home on the day?
Yes! Unlike pottery (which needs kiln firing), your candle is completely finished by the end of the 90-minute session and goes straight home with you. It's ready to display — or light — immediately.
How much does the Statement Candle Bowl Workshop cost?
Tickets are £48 per person. Everything is included — vessel, paints, wax, moulds, essential oils, botanicals, and all materials. Just bring yourself (and your drinks if you're going BYOB 🥂) You can request a group discount if you are booking more than 12 people.
Is this workshop good for hen parties?
Absolutely — it's one of our most popular hen party experiences in London, and honestly one of the best things you can do for a group. Here's why it works so well:
Everyone gets fully absorbed in making their own thing, which means conversation flows naturally. And then at the end, when everyone holds up their finished candle, you get this brilliant moment where you look around and realise every single one is completely different — same materials, same studio, totally unique results. It's a genuinely memorable group moment.
It's also BYOB, so you can bring prosecco, wine, cocktails — whatever makes the afternoon feel like a celebration. No rush, no pressure, just a really good few hours.
Is the Statement Candle Bowl Workshop good for work socials?
Yes — it's become one of our go-to recommendations for work socials and team events. It's sociable without being forced, creative without being intimidating, and the BYOB format means it feels more like an evening out than a team-building exercise. Groups of colleagues consistently leave surprised by how different everyone's candles look, which makes for a great conversation across the session.
What's the group size?
Sessions are capped at 18 people. If you have a larger group, get in touch via WhatsApp and we'll see what we can arrange.
Is the workshop BYOB?
Yes! Bring whatever you like to drink. We'd also love it if you brought your own reusable cup or glass — we're working to reduce single-use plastic in the studio and every bit helps. 🌿
